KAALO wins best film award at SA Horror fest

The Yash Patnaik produced and Wilson Louis-directed horror film KAALO has won two awards at the South African Horrorfest held at Cape Town from 27 October to 5 November. The film won the best feature film award and also the best cinematography award.
Said Wilson Louis, 'Getting an international recognition that too for a horror film to an Indian filmmaker like me gives me an opening and a thought process to hence forward make films in which I am apt in.'Other films that lapped up awards were THE TAINT that received the most outrageous award, Ken Foree won the best male award for ZONE OF THE DEAD while Kristina Klebe annexed the best female lead award for the same film.
The best screenplay award went to Adam Mason and Simon Boyes won the best screenplay award for BLOOD RIVER, Pushpank Gawade won the best cinematography award for KAALO.
While THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA that won the audience choice award, WALKING DISTANCE won the best special FX make-up award.

All set for a hat trick of hits with her upcoming film BAND BAAJA BAARAAT (carrying a very positive response), Anushka Sharma is certainly overjoyed, elated and extremely confident. Her first two films, RAB NE BANA DI JODI and BADMAASH COMPANY, for Yash Raj Films have been successful (more so RAB NE.. which is a blockbuster and BADMAASH COMPANY a hit) and trade is pretty confident that Anushka will weave her magic with BAND BAAJA BAThere was news that Anushka's three film contract with Yash Raj Films which she had signed has now ended and so she is free to sign new films. Rubbishing the reports Anushka says that that there was no contract whatsoever and clarifies that she had signed Nikhil Advani's PATIALA HOUSE even before BAND BAAJA BAARAAT.
She however accepted that it was a mutual agreement that she would do three film with Yash Raj but no one stopped her from signing films with any outside banner. She also added that if Yash Raj Films and Aditya feel that her presence is required in any movie she would be glad to be a part of even ten more films as she owes everything to them.
Certainly it's heartening to see such attitude, especially from youngsters, which shows that loyalty and gratitude still exists in Bollwyood, after all we have seen so many examples when big stars deserted their mentors after success.ARAAT as well.

Kannada film industry’s most happening superstar Puneeth Rajkumar takes on the lead role in Kannada remake of ‘Nadodigal’, which is yet to be titled. The movie was launched day before yesterday in Bangalore with Puneeth Rajkumar’s mother Parvathamma, wife of late actor Dr. Rajkumar and actor Ravichandran launched the movie.

The film is produced by Puneeth Rajkumar’s home banner and is directed by famous filmmaker K Madesha. Yogish, Srinagar Kitty and Radhika Pandit are playing other lead roles. Abhinaya, who performed the sister roles in ‘Nadodigal’ and its Telugu version ‘Shambo Shiva Shambo’ takes on the same role here as well.

Sathya Hegde is handling cinematography and music director V Harikrishna is scoring music. This will be a long term project with a schedule of 100days and will be shot across various parts of Mysore, Chikkade, Bangalore and Chitra Durga.

Sadha said that she lost lot of offers due to Hindi films. She while speaking to the media said,” I got lot of offers after the hit film Jayam which was released in Tamil and Telugu.

Later on I paired with Vikram in the film Anniyan which was directed by Shankar. This film was a great hit and earned me a great recognition in the South Indian languages.

After acting in 20 films in Tamil, Telugu , Kannada and Malayalam films, I decided to act in Hindi films. I acted in Hindi films Love Khichdi and Click. But these films did not release in time. The shooting of these films were commenced and was prolonging.

My call sheet was wasted. Since there was a condition that I can accept new films only after completing these films, I had to lose other opportunities. I cannot blame anyone for this. Endhiran to speak English, in 3D

Endhiran will be released in a 3D English version for the international market. Says Sun TV CEO Hansraj Saxena, “We have been under pressure to complete and release Endhiran in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. But now, considering how well it has been received in the South and North, we are looking at an English version for the international market.” Seven minutes of footage is already in 3D, and will be added to the Tamil, Telugu and Hindi versions later. The film will be released in Japan in a dubbed version too. “But first, we’d like to take Endhiran to film festivals,” says Saxena.

Endhiran, which was released a fortnight before has brought life to an age-old debate. No! We are not going to discuss about Endhiran. The debate is actually on a larger perspective. A scale which is larger than that of Endhiran's! What is it that actually makes a movie work? We all know that the making of a movie is no less than weaving a magic spell on the audience. But it is also a collective effort, a combined effort of hundreds of individuals.

So who takes the larger share of the pie here? Everyone involved in the movie has the right to claim that the movie's success is theirs. The director, producer, cinematographer, musician, lyricist… everyone has an equal part to play in a movie. The phenomenal success of Endhiran has added a new dimension to the topic. Is a big-budget movie a recipe for success? Analysts will argue that a small budget movie like Kalavani was also a huge success. OK!

There have been so many instances in the past where big budget movies have fallen and small timers have tasted huge success. A very obvious example is that of Pasanga. A movie which featured school children and was targeted mostly at children was a huge success. It reaped rich harvests across the world with so many awards in International film festivals and four national

awards. So, are story and direction keys to success? In that case, movies like Anbe Sivam and Virumandi should never have been flops. Actor Vijay tasted huge success with a string of hits movies like Gilli, Sivakasi, Tirupachi and Pokkiri. So, is star value the focal point to the movies success? Think about Vijay's movies of the recent past and we can say it is not.

Music has played a very important role in Indian movies, Kollywood in particular. There have been movies in the past that have become hits only because of songs and romantic numbers. Is music instrumental in the movie's success? Well, directors of late have opted to choose scripts which take a detour from the normal. Kamal Hassan starrer Unnaipol Oruvan succeeded without a single romantic number. Same goes with other departments which have equal contribution in the making of movie. So what is it that makes a movie click?

If we take a look at this year's hit movies, we can possibly have an idea (not a conclusion) of what it takes to strike gold. We have star value in Sura, Singam and Asal, musical hits like Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya and Paiyaa, experiments like Ayirathil Oruvan and Raavanan, comedy in movies like Boss Engira Baskiran and one movie which had all, Endhiran. This has made the situation hazier than before. We can only infer that success of a movie is about street smart direction. The difference here is between having food at home and in a restaurant. It is about cooking the recipe with all the required ingredients.

Endhiran has only emphasized this very fact. It has the required star value, peppy songs, great locations, the required computer graphics and the right script which can make the audience think about the movie after leaving the movie hall. Such a budget was required because the script required it. We may again be proved wrong if a movie of such extravagance fails in the future. For now, the credit goes to ... the smarter brain!

3 Idiots From December 6

Yesterday, official confirmations about the ‘3 Idiots’ remake were made by some of the closer sources of S Pictures. Now it has been revealed that first Shankar may start shooting for the Telugu version.

According to the sources, the film is scheduled to go on floors on December 6 as call sheets of Mahesh Babu are not hectic at that point. With Vijay, nothing has been confirmed. As of now, Jeeva has been confirmed the other lead role while details on other actor isn’t finalized yet. It may be either Siddarth or Arya as the duo has gained popularity across Telugu and Tamil film industries.

Harris Jayaraj has completed couple of tunes for Telugu version and Manoj Paramahamsa will handle cinematography.

The Race is Tough for the Three Diwali Releases

Three big flicks (big in terms of popularity and reach) are releasing this Diwali to fall on November 5, 2010. Prabhu Solomon’s Mynaa which is touted to be an intense love story that moves each and everyone is on its way. The film had already given sleepless nights to its distributor ‘Udhayanidhi Stalin’ of Red Giant Movies.

Va Quarter Cutting is another film which is well marketed by the film’s story taking place within twelve hours from evening to the next day morning had already raised some level of anticipation. This quirky entertainer is about the slums of Chennai once again very much as their earlier outing ‘Orampo Auto’.

Another film for Diwali is Uththamaputhiran which has Dhanush and Genelia in the lead and hence the hype. Dhanush will be pitted against Rajinikanth to make collections possible amidst Endhiran’s roaring success.

Even though these films are releasing on November 5, Endhiran will be sold largely on Diwali and will give a tough fight to the other films. Theaters insist on showing Endhiran and hence, these films releasing on Diwali will get smaller screens from the multiplexes.

These three films have started their newspaper ad campaigns with theater names on them but still there is hesitation among distributors to take these films.

It’s official now. Sasikumar has revealed the title ‘Eesan’ for his next film. It has been nearly couple of years after the success of ‘Subramaniapuram’. Unlike his previous films, the complete story is set in backdrops of Chennai and the story revolves around night lives of Chennai.

Director Samuthirakkani, who played negative role in ‘Subramaniapuram’, takes on the protagonist’s character with newcomer Aparna and Vaibhav in other lead roles. ‘Nadodigal’ fame Abhinaya is also included in the star-casts.

The same technical crew of ‘Subramaniapuram’ – music director James Vasanthan and cinematographer Kathir have joined hands with Sasikumar for this film as well.

The first look posters of the film is much reveals the pictures of pubs and discotheques. 99% of the film’s shooting has been completed and the release dates will be shortly announced. Court Summons Nayan, Prabhu Deva

It is trouble time for Nayanthara and Prabhu Deva. The legal tussle between the two and Prabhu Deva's wife Ramlat is well known. The Court had earlier ordered Nayan and Prabhu Deva to appear today (October 19, 2010) after Ramlat filed a petition against divorce. But none of them appeared at 11:30 AM, the time when the court took up the case. Noting this, the Court has ordered summons to be sent to both the actors.

The Court has sent a summon through the ‘Nadigar Sangam’ to Nayanthara which means that both the parties are responsible for the Court’s order. It has further said that Nayan and Prabhu Deva must appear before the judges on November 23, 2010 when the case is taken up again. Rumours also indicate that Nayanthara has acted in a commercial for a well known garment house recently.

Madhavan and Vikram to work again

Vikram Kumar is now busy finalizing the cast and crew for the film. Since the film will be made simultaneously in Telugu, Hindi and Tamil, he is on pursuit of an actress, who has immense popularity in all the regional film industries. He was earlier reported of directing a sci-fi thriller with Vijay in lead role. It was revealed that A.M. Rathnam of Sri Suriya Movies is to produce the film and it seems the project is postponed due to Vijay’s busy schedules with other films.

‘Angadi Theru’ at Goa Film Festival

The International Film Festival at Goa will take place from November 22 to December 2. Vasanthabalan’s ‘Angadi Theru’ and Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ravanan’ are to be screened at the festival.

Seeing the 140 films to be screened at the festival, 26 Indian language filsm have been chosen by a committee headed by N Chandra.

‘Ravanan’ directed by Mani Ratnam and featuring Vikram, Prithviraj and Aishwarya Rai and ‘Angadi Theru’ featuring Anjali and directed by Vasanthabalan have been selected for screening. Malayalam film ‘Athma Katha’ directed by Premlal is also to be screened at the fest.

‘Engeyum Kadhal’ songs from Oct. 24

The songs of Prabhu Deva’s forthcoming directorial film ‘Engeyum Kadhal’ will be out on October 24. This was the film originally titled ‘Ich’ and later underwent the change to ‘Engeyum Kadhal’.

The film is a cheerful romance staring ‘Jayam’ Ravi and Hansika Motwani in the lead roles. About 90 percent of the film was shot in pictorial European locales. It is produced by Kalpathi Agoram under AGS banner.

Harris Jayaraj has scored the music for ‘Engeyum Kadhal’ and sources say the songs have his unique touches to make them one of the first and best albums of 2010.

The audio launch was first planned for October 3 and the ‘Endhiran’ effect made the producers to postpone the date.

So is it surprising that Rajinikanth, 61, has just starred in India's most expensive film which is also set to become India's most successful movie? Three years after his last big hit, the Rs 60-crore, 1,000-print Sivaji: The Boss made Rs 128 crore; two years after the Rs 64-crore Kuselan tanked at the box office making just Rs 8 crore; and a year after his daughter's ambitious animated film Sultan ran into production and legal troubles, Shankar's Endhiran: The Robot has created a buzz that will translate into a Rs 300- crore box office gross on Sun Pictures' publicly listed balance sheet and act as a neat little pre-Diwali gift to Tamil Nadu's ruling family. With the opening weekend gross alone being Rs 90 crore, he has also proved himself worthy of the tag of being Asia's second highest paid actor at Rs 45 crore. Whether it is shooting down policemen as the evil robot with the memorable Terminator-like line, 'Happy Diwali, folks,' or wooing Aishwarya with copies of A Briefer History of Time and Freakonomics, the hero-of-10-wigs has proved himself irresistible to all psychographics, young and old, MIT alumni and Mylapore maamis, urban sophisticates and rural fanatics. Part urban legend now with the 99 Rajinikanth jokes (a sample, water boils faster when Rajinikanth stares at it) and part global phenomenon (The Robot has become India's highest grossing opening weekend film in the US at $2.5 million), he has established that he is The Superstar, with a box office collection surpassing India's biggest hit so far, 3 Idiots. A superstar who draws fans to the first day, first show of his film at 3 a.m. in Chennai's Rohini theatre; whose film has had the widest release across 3,000 screens worldwide; whose movie tickets were sold for up to $40 in some US theatres during the opening weekend; and whose releases are greeted with special prayers, milk abhishekams and public tonsuring, Rajinikanth proves that no matter where you are from (a Kannadiga who speaks Marathi) or how you began in life (as a bus conductor), success can be grasped faster than he can utter his "punch" dialogues. Sun Network Chairman Kalanithi Maran wanted a Tamil film for the international audience with an "international" standard, says Hansraj Saxena, COO, Sun Pictures. "After Eros's Ayngaran International pulled out because of the recession and there were no takers for Endhiran, Maran took on the project. He was sure he would get back the money he invested," says Tamil writer Vaasanthi. Sun's marketing muscle, enveloping the state in surround sound, helped. Sun Pictures is part of the Sun TV network, which owns a dozen newspapers and magazines, 21 TV channels, 43 FM radio stations and controls 30 per cent of movie theatres in Tamil Nadu. Sun Network channels-Sun TV, K TV and Gemini TV-have been running trailers, its magazines like Kungumam, newspaper Dinakaran and the evening daily Tamil Murasu have done cover stories, and even the film's five-minute trailer, released in over 20 per cent theatres in Tamil Nadu, ran housefull at Rs 120 a ticket. Everything was to be done bigger and better, whether it was A.R. Rahman's music, Resul Pookutty's sound or Stan Winston Studio's special effects, making it a milestone in Indian cinema. What's more, the film was smartly pre-sold. The Hindi theatrical rights were sold to Manohar Prasad's Gemini Film Circuit for Rs 23 crore, Telugu rights to Thota Kanna Rao of Sri Krishna Traders for Rs 27 crore, Kannada and Malayalam for Rs 14 crore, the Tamil overseas rights for Rs 17 crore, the music rights for Rs 10 crore, home video in all languages for Rs 17 crore, and tv rights for Rs 25 crore. In Tamil Nadu, Sun Pictures retained the distribution rights, while in Chennai it sold them to a trusted lieutenant of dmk leader M. Karunanidhi, T. Nagar District Secretary J. Anbhazhagan, for Rs 27 crore. With a projected Tamil theatrical box office revenue of Rs 88 crore, the film will make more than a tidy profit. With 3,000 screens multiplied by four shows a day and at least 500 seats per show, the number of people who watched The Robot nationwide on opening day was an astounding 15 lakh. Add to all this Rs 20 crore earned by the Sun Network channels from the movie's promotional programmes, with ad costs averaging Rs 35,000 for 10 seconds. This story is simple enough. It's the war between man and machine. Rajinikanth is Vazikaran, the Cornell and Stanford trained scientist who creates Chitti, a robot who will replace soldiers, by acting and thinking like a human. But he falls in love with Aishwarya, a medical student named Sana, who is already in love with Vazikaran. Naturally there is an evil Green Goblin kind of scientist, Bohra, played by Danny, who wants to exploit this weakness in Chitti's silicon heart. The last 40 minutes is a real celebration for Rajini fans, as he struts on screen as Chitti, upgraded version 2.0, enjoying his wickedness, morphing from snake to giant man to enormous tower in one breath, intent on creating a new species, Robo sapiens. Industry sources say around Rs 50 crore was spent on the last 40 minutes and Rs 3 crore was spent for Rajinikanth's make-up alone. The sets for the climax cost Rs 5 crore. Beats zari borders and San Francisco skylines anytime. For all its lightness of spirit and comic book humour, The Robot is also a triumph of technology. Domes light technology has been used to shoot 3D images of Rajinikanth for the first time to match the skin tone lighting for both the human and the Rs 4.8-crore robot. The camera report for the entire movie runs to around 1,600 pages and 40 per cent of the budget of the film has been spent on special effects. "There are 1,500 CG shots in the film, of which 200 are complicated shots. Twenty-two scenes of the movie have been shot using animatronics and special make-up," says director Shankar, who last worked with Rajinikanth on Sivaji: The Boss. Everything is in excess. Fifty-seven costumes for Aishwarya and 55 for Rajinikanth were designed by Mary E. Vogt; dance moguls like Prabhu Deva, Raju Sundaram and Lawrence Raghavendra choreographed the five songs; and the locations varied from Vienna to Machu Picchu in Peru. Having raised the bar with The Robot, Rajinikanth will now have to do bigger and better. "After Chandramukhi in 2005, he was a superstar not just for Kollywood but also a top actor for the international audience," says software professional Simply Sundar, who also runs a fansite devoted to Rajinikanth. The actor's registered fan base has now crossed two crores, with 50,000 registered fan clubs and 50,000 unregistered. In keeping with the apolitical nature of Endhiran, Rajinikanth has made it clear that politics is not his next act. He may have gone to meet Bal Thackeray during his Mumbai visit, but all he will publicly say about what is next is that he is planning a holiday. So it seems is Sun Pictures. With no direct productions in the pipeline, it intends to acquire distribution rights of the Rs 38-crore Vijay-starrer Kavalan. Topping the man who can divide by zero or drown a fish, as the jokes go, will not be easy. The similarity between Ra One and The Robot

Apart from the fact that both the film Ra One and Endhiran are India’s first sci-fi thrillers, there turns to be yet another connection between these flicks. All the comparison started after the release of superstar Rajnikanth’s The Robot. Soon after watching the film Robot (Hindi version of Endhiran), it was reported that SRK called for a SOS meeting with his technicians to make some changes to the script of Ra One. He wanted to add more emotional quotients to this sci-fi thriller.

Buzz up! Academy award winner Resul Pookutty is yet another commonality and he has already gained the laurels for his best sound in Rajnikanth’s film. Resul has been trying hard to bring the best sound with Ra One.

Recently in an interview, he uncovered a striking similarity between these films. Both of them have a mind-boggling train chasing sequence. However, SRK has decided to re edit the shots and add flavors to it so that audiences don’t term it as a ‘copycat’. The sources reveal that the action sequence has been shot at a cost of Rs. 3 crores.

Considering Annu Kapoor’s age and seniority, Bollywood actor Priyanka refused to shoot intimate scene with him for Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’.

A source said, “Vishal is an ace filmmaker and the scene will be portrayed in such a way that the viewer will not realise that the two actors didn’t shoot for it together.”

When contacted, Annu Kapoor confirmed the news saying “Vishal ne mujhe bola ki Priyanka sharma rahi hai. Maineusko bola toh fir scene hi kaat do na?”

Rajinikanth Son in Law Dhanush Watched Enthiran Second Time

Ratha Charithram First Part Not Release In Tamil Nadu

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma and his producers have decided not to release the first part of Ratha Charithram because the makers are not keen on revealing Suriya’s look, prior to the release of the Tamil version.

According to the trade reports, Telugu and Hindi version of Ratha Charithram first part are scheduled to hit the screens on October 22, while the Tamil version will release along with the second part on November 19. Sources close to Ram Gopal Varma has revealed that Suriya will be appearing during the last 10 mins of the first part. If it gets released in Tamil Nadu, it will gradually reveal the look of film. Dayanidhi Azhagiri of Cloud Nine Productions has also agreed to this as he felt that the Tamil version shouldn’t been affected by these releases.

The Tamil version is nothing but sleekly edited versions of both the first and the second part. Vivek Oberoi has a huge fan following in Tamil Nadu primarily for his kind gesture of adopting an entire village of Tamil Nadu, that was affected by Tsunami in 2004. Although, Ram Gopal Varma hasn’t made any Tamil film, still there is a large section of die hard fans for his movies. With Suriya and Priyamani as the main highlighting factors of the Tamil version, Dayanidhi Azhagiri plans for a bigger release of Ratha Charithram . Although the songs of the Tamil version were released a couple of weeks earlier, none of them have become popular due to the lack of publicity.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has roped in music composer and two-time Oscar winner A.R. Rahman as brand ambassador for its small car Etios to be launched in December.

Rahman will endorse the Etios through various marketing campaigns, the company said Friday.

“There is a very strong connect between the product and its brand ambassador, with both being global, innovative, reliable, and a class-above quality,” said Hiroshi Nakagawa, managing director, TKM. The new Toyota hatchback is said to have been designed for the mass volume segment of the Indian market and will compete in the Rs.3-5 lakh price band.

Suriya And Hrithik Roshan Clash

Suriya’s debut in Bollywood isn’t going to be as easy as he ever thought of. The actor makes his entry into the Hindi film industry with Ram Gopal Varma’s directorial venture Raktha Charithra.

Both Hindi and Telugu versions will be released in two parts while Tamil version titled Rattha Charithram will be in a single part. The producers have now decided to release Raktha Charithra-1 on October 22, which will feature Vivek Oberoi in the major role and on par, Suriya is reported of overshadowing Vivek Oberoi’s character in the second part. This morning, Ram Gopal Varma has confirmed that the film’s second part will hit the screens on November 19 and so will be Tamil version.

One can expect Suriya to have a clean sweep of success with the Telugu and Tamil versions. YVS Chowdary is set to introduce Chiranjeevi’s sister's son Sai Dharam Tej as hero to the Telugu film industry. Titled ‘Rey’, the film’s brochure launch took place on Thursday at Film Chamber in Hyderabad. Senior journalist BA Raju unveiled the brochure and presented it to another senior journalist A Prabha.

Andhra Boxoffice - Endhiran alone has surpassed the Rs. 100 crore

Endhiran/Robo/Robot's success has hushed up the furore over dubbed movies having a swell time in Hyderabad.

Man, machine, mohabbat. was a rather cheesy tagline for a film futuristically titled Robot and became the butt of sms jokes before Rajnikanth's costliest film till date hit theatres. The jokes and debates about why Southern stars don't stir the box office across India died a quiet death once Shankar's Robot/Robo/Endhiran arrived. Trade pundits who did the math trying to gauge if Shankar's expensive gamble would recover its cost, are now trying to fathom the record- shattering collections. Cinema halls in Hyderabad have been juggling show timings to meet the demands for the screening of Tamil, Telugu and the Hindi versions. Brave the serpentine queues and reach the ticket counter to be faced with a standard question: "Tamil, Telugu or Hindi?" before you get the tickets. It's more likely that you see houseful boards though. Film buffs in the city have had the advantage of watching original films releasing alongside their dubbed/remade counterparts for quite some time now. Gautham Menon's Ye Maya Chesave did roaring business even as the Tamil version Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaye sailed through in three multiplexes, drawing moderate to full houses for 2-3 shows a day. Karthi's Awara, helped by Yuvan Shankar Raja's lilting tunes, earned him recognition among Telugu film goers. The Tamil original Paiyya, which released simultaneously, saw Tamilians settled in the city queuing up. And Mani Ratnam's Raavan and Villain were cold turkeys, but that didn't stop film buffs from checking out the Tamil original Raavanan and drawing comparisons between the different versions. Srikanth, general manager, Prasads multiplex, sees this as a reflection of Hyderabad's cosmopolitan culture: "There was a time when original Tamil, Kannada or Malayalam films would be screened in Hyderabad a good two to three months after their release in the neighbouring states. And those screenings were confined to morning shows. The increased response to native films has made it possible to screen more shows. Hyderabad is no more a vernacular city. It's only fair that people get to see a film in their language of preference," he says. On Wednesday, a day before the release of NTR's Brindaavanam, Robo was being screened for 10 shows in a leading multiplex with each one of them running to packed houses. Vasu of Multidimensional Pictures that distributed the movie feels Hyderabad is at a stage where it can leverage on its multi-lingual population. The furore raised by a section of the industry over dubbed films getting prominence is unwarranted, he says. "To the audience, all that matters is an entertaining film. We released the Telugu version in 205 theatres in the Nizam region and the collections have been 85 to 90 per cent even during weekdays. Tamil Nadu and Kerala do not have a problem with dubbed films and given Hyderabad's cosmopolitan society, it shouldn't be an issue here," he asserts. Trade analyst Komal Nahata affirms that Endhiran/ Robot has broken language barriers elsewhere in the country too. "Endhiran alone has made business more than Rs. 100 crore, the magic mark that distributors earned through 3 Idiots. North Indians who don't take kindly to Rajnikanth and other South Indian stars have accepted the film, which in itself is a huge success," he sums up. According to exhibitors in Hyderabad, tickets were sold out for Endhiran sooner than they did for Robo and Robot. The film has been running to packed houses in all three languages, leaving theatre owners perplexed as to how to make way for this week's releases — Brindaavanam, Aakrosh and Knock Out. The growing number of shows and response to originals like Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaya, Raavanan and Paiyya alongside the respective Telugu dubbed/remade versions Ye Maya Chesave, Villain and Awara are indicators to the city's cosmopolitan nature. The distributors' share from Endhiran alone has surpassed the Rs. 100 crore, beating the previous record of 3 Idiots. Trade pundits note that Robot's acceptance in Mumbai, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan regions break the notion that Southern stars are paper tigers in Bollywood strongholds.

4 Oct – The weekend box office belonged to revered actor Rajnikanth as his Tamil blockbuster "Endhiran" (variants: "Enthiran", "Robot", "Robo") grossed in excess of RM3 million across more than 100 Malaysian screens for the weekend just gone, while Facebook movie "The Social Network" topped the U.S. charts with an estimated gross of US$ 23 million. The latter opens in Malaysia this 11 November.

Sources within Lotus Five Star AV have confirmed that they are expecting a 100-day run and a total gross of RM20 million if Rajnikanth fans throw their support behind the Kollywood giant.

Many cinemagoers have been bombarding the cinema chains on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter with pre-sales enquiries prior to the opening day. Fortunately, there was no repeat of the "Sivaji" fiasco two years ago where problems with the digital download of the movie resulted in delayed or cancelled shows and a horde of angry patrons, which in turn resulted in public mayhem involving police intervention.

Cinema showtimes for "Endhiran" were also the most viewed on Cinema Online's website, with more than 50,000 unique page views by the opening day. Leading chain GSC also reported a spectacular spike in their Facebook activity notification, mostly attributed to anxious fans who were waiting for reservations to open for the monster title.

Whether it is shooting down policemen as the evil robot with the memorable Terminator-like line, 'Happy Diwali, folks,' or wooing Aishwarya with copies of A Briefer History of Time andFreakonomics, the hero-of-10-wigs has proved himself irresistible to all psychographics, young and old, MIT alumni and Mylapore maamis, urban sophisticates and rural fanatics.
Part urban legend now with the 99 Rajinikanth jokes (a sample, water boils faster when Rajinikanth stares at it) and part global phenomenon (The Robot has become India's highest grossing opening weekend film in the US at $2.5 million), he has established that he is The Superstar, with a box office collection surpassing India's biggest hit so far, 3 Idiots.

A superstar who draws fans to the first day, first show of his film at 3 a.m. in Chennai's Rohini theatre; whose film has had the widest release across 3,000 screens worldwide; whose movie tickets were sold for up to $40 in some US theatres during the opening weekend; and whose releases are greeted with special prayers, milk abhishekams and public tonsuring, Rajinikanth proves that no matter where you are from (a Kannadiga who speaks Marathi) or how you began in life (as a bus conductor), success can be grasped faster than he can utter his "punch" dialogues.

With 3,000 screens multiplied by four shows a day, the number of people whowatched the film nationwide on the opening day was 15 lakh.
For Sun Pictures, who spent Rs 200 crore on production and marketing, it was a trophy project. Sun Network Chairman Kalanithi Maran wanted a Tamil film for the international audience with an "international" standard, says Hansraj Saxena, COO, Sun Pictures. "After Eros's Ayngaran International pulled out because of the recession and there were no takers for Endhiran, Maran took on the project. He was sure he would get back the money he invested," says Tamil writer Vaasanth
Sun's marketing muscle, enveloping the state in surround sound, helped. Sun Pictures is part of the Sun TV network, which owns a dozen newspapers and magazines, 21 TV channels, 43 FM radio stations and controls 30 per cent of movie theatres in Tamil Nadu. Sun Network channels-Sun TV, K TV and Gemini TV-have been running trailers, its magazines like Kungumam, newspaperDinakaran and the evening daily Tamil Murasu have done cover stories, and even the film's five-minute trailer, released in over 20 per cent theatres in Tamil Nadu, ran housefull at Rs 120 a ticket. Everything was to be done bigger and better, whether it was A.R. Rahman's music, Resul Pookutty's sound or Stan Winston Studio's special effects, making it a milestone in Indian cinema.

Rajini Rage

He doesn't care for wigs offscreen, doesn't sell films but presents them to the nation, and is not even a native of Tamil Nadu. But his rise from his first film in 1975, K. Balachanders Apoorva Raagangal, is the stuff of legend.

Sivaji: The Boss (2007) He played a software engineer who returns to clean up the city. He changes the colour of his skin at will, bounces chewing gum around, and dances in front of the Guggenheim Bilbao. He was paid Rs 26 crore. Movie made Rs 128 crore.

What's more, the film was smartly pre-sold. The Hindi theatrical rights were sold to Manohar Prasad's Gemini Film Circuit for Rs 23 crore, Telugu rights to Thota Kanna Rao of Sri Krishna Traders for Rs 27 crore, Kannada and Malayalam for Rs 14 crore, the Tamil overseas rights for Rs 17 crore, the music rights for Rs 10 crore, home video in all languages for Rs 17 crore, and tv rights for Rs 25 crore.

In Tamil Nadu, Sun Pictures retained the distribution rights, while in Chennai it sold them to a trusted lieutenant of dmk leader M. Karunanidhi, T. Nagar District Secretary J. Anbhazhagan, for Rs 27 crore. With a projected Tamil theatrical box office revenue of Rs 88 crore, the film will make more than a tidy profit. With 3,000 screens multiplied by four shows a day and at least 500 seats per show, the number of people who watched The Robotnationwide on opening day was an astounding 15 lakh. Add to all this Rs 20 crore earned by the Sun Network channels from the movie's promotional programmes, with ad costs averaging Rs 35,000 for 10 seconds.

This story is simple enough. It's the war between man and machine. Rajinikanth is Vazikaran, the Cornell and Stanford trained scientist who creates Chitti, a robot who will replace soldiers, by acting and thinking like a human. But he falls in love with Aishwarya, a medical student named Sana, who is already in love with Vazikaran. Naturally there is an evil Green Goblin kind of scientist, Bohra, played by Danny, who wants to exploit this weakness in Chitti's silicon heart.
The last 40 minutes is a real celebration for Rajini fans, as he struts on screen as Chitti, upgraded version 2.0, enjoying his wickedness, morphing from snake to giant man to enormous tower in one breath, intent on creating a new species, Robo sapiens. Industry sources say around Rs 50 crore was spent on the last 40 minutes and Rs 3 crore was spent for Rajinikanth's make-up alone. The sets for the climax cost Rs 5 crore. Beats zari borders and San Francisco skylines anytime.

For all its lightness of spirit and comic book humour, The Robot is also a triumph of technology. Domes light technology has been used to shoot 3D images of Rajinikanth for the first time to match the skin tone lighting for both the human and the Rs 4.8-crore robot. The camera report for the entire movie runs to around 1,600 pages and 40 per cent of the budget of the film has been spent on special effects.
"There are 1,500 CG shots in the film, of which 200 are complicated shots. Twenty-two scenes of the movie have been shot using animatronics and special make-up," says director Shankar, who last worked with Rajinikanth on Sivaji: The Boss. Everything is in excess. Fifty-seven costumes for Aishwarya and 55 for Rajinikanth were designed by Mary E. Vogt; dance moguls like Prabhu Deva, Raju Sundaram and Lawrence Raghavendra choreographed the five songs; and the locations varied from Vienna to Machu Picchu in Peru.
Having raised the bar with The Robot, Rajinikanth will now have to do bigger and better. "After Chandramukhi in 2005, he was a superstar not just for Kollywood but also a top actor for the international audience," says software professional Simply Sundar, who also runs a fansite devoted to Rajinikanth. The actor's registered fan base has now crossed two crores, with 50,000 registered fan clubs and 50,000 unregistered.
The last 40 minutes, which make it count for the fans, are worth Rs 50 crore. Rajinikanth's make-up alone cost rs 3 crore.
In keeping with the apolitical nature of Endhiran, Rajinikanth has made it clear that politics is not his next act. He may have gone to meet Bal Thackeray during his Mumbai visit, but all he will publicly say about what is next is that he is planning a holiday.

Kaavalam Goes For 1.5 Crore

With Kaavalan’s shoot and post-production work almost over, the production team seems to be gearing up for selling the rights of the movie. Although many of the national and regional markets are yet to make business, what with the not-so-enthusiastic performance of Vijay’s previous films, international market has already been sold out. Tantra Films has fetched the movie for Rs 6 crore to be released outside India.

It’s also learnt that the Kerala rights of Kaavalan has been sold at 1.5 crore to Thameens Films. Though Kaavalan is a remake of the Malayalam hit Bodyguard, the Vijay craze among the fans in Kerala has done the magic.

Three rascals – The whys and why-nots?

Even after two weeks of its release the buzz about Shankar’ Magnum Opus Endhiran hasn’t eased out, but talks about his next venture Three Rascals (official remake of 3 Idiots) has started doing its rounds in media circle and among fans.

Though we haven’t got any official confirmation about the movie from Shankar’s side let us see why and why should not there be 3 Rascals.

Why?

1) Just because of the plot - Yes we definitely need a story like 3 idiots which questions the current educational system in India where students focus is merely on marks rather than knowledge. Certain dialogues can really drive one to think in a different way. For e.g. Aamir Khan questions, “Rewind your life for a minute, did we ever think that we will learn something new today which we will enjoy in our life at some point?” Wise, right?

2) When you make your dream come true and when you are literally tired of making a real biggie after working for more than two and half years you really need to indulge yourself in a quickie where you pause your experimentation mode and make a simple and feel good movie.

3) Reports say that 3 Rascals will be a quickie and will not take 2 years of production time as Shankar’s other film do. And Shankar’s fans do not want to wait for another 3 years to get his venture released.

Why not?

1) Even though we need a subject like 3 idiots, do we want a director like Shankar to remake a film especially after doing a film like Endhiran?

2) Everyone knows how creative Shankar is, so what will be his contribution is a remake movie which was shot based on a novel.

3) Like superstar’s film Shankar’s film challenges his own previous ventures in terms of budget, quality, technical aspects … and what would we get if Shankar’s dream crosses Endhiran. Do we really need a subject like rascals or something bigger than that?

Though nothing has been officially confirmed yet Shankar will be thinking more than anyone to touch a remake subject especially at this point of his career.

Even though Shankar will not be interested in costume remakes what one would expect from Shankar is to make a movie based on the novel rather than an actual remake from B-town.

Bips in ‘action’ now…

Just recently, Bipasha had expressed her itching desire to do an action role after a spate of serious, character-based roles in her recent films. Well, the wish has been granted. She will reportedly play a femme fatale in the movie titled Players which will be the official remake of The Italian Job.

From what we learn, the makers of the film saw the rushes of Rohan Sippy’s upcoming film Dum Maaro Dum which has Bipasha playing a Goan junkie. Moreover, Bipasha’s spunky performance in Dhoom 2 was also in their mind.

Players will have Bipasha sharing screen space with actors like Abhishek Bachchan, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Bobby Deol.

It will be a full-on action film revolving around a heist, with loads of stunts, pyrotechnics and, needless to say, unexpected twists and turns in the plot.

Sonam Kapoor the next Alice, in wonderland…

Sonam Kapoor’s amazing performances in her recent flicks, have bowled over bigwigs of Bollywood. No wonder every B-town director wants to cast Sonam Kapoor as the lead actress in his upcoming film. The latest addition to the list is ‘Quickgun Murugun’ director Shashanka Ghosh.

Sonam Kapoor has grabbed the attention of director Shashank Ghosh, who is toying with the idea of making an Indianized version of Alice In Wonderland – Sonam Kapoor in the lead role.

“I’d like to do my version of Alice In Wonderland with Sonam. But for now I’m doing something else for her home production,” Shashank is quoted as saying by a tabloid.

He confirm that the movie will be very different from Sonam’s last film Aisha.

Interestingly, Shashanka is planning to take the movie on the floors in March 2011, but he has not met Sonam yet to discuss the project. Ghosh has not even seen any of the Sonam’s movies.

John Abraham behind bars for 15 days…

Four years after he was accused of rash and negligent driving, Bollywood actor John Abraham was on Thursday sentenced to 15 days’ simple imprisonment by the Bandra magistrate’s court.

In April 2006, Abraham had rammed his Yamaha Hayabusa motorbike into a cycle, injuring two people in the accident.

Today, the verdict was pronounced and the actor was sentenced a jail term of 15 days. However, the actor was granted bail from the court. Abraham was present with his lawyer Robin Periera in the court today and nodded when the court pronounced the judgment. Metropolitan magistrate S V Kulkarni held him guilty of reckless driving and causing hurt but took into consideration the fact that he did not flee. “Your move was humane and kind as you immediately took both victims to the hospital.”

John is a lover of motor bikes and has always professed safe driving. He has said that the accident that occurred in 2006 was ‘unfortunate’.

Mallika Sherawat became the hot shot of Bollywood after her scorching performance in Murder. The film was an instant hit, and after that there was no looking back for the actress.

Emraan Hashmi and Mallika Sherawat are expected to reunite for the sequel. The sequel will be helmed by Mohit Suri. Mallika, who is in India for her film Hissss promotion and Double Dhamaal shoot, is reported to be visiting Bhatt’s office quite often. The actress is keen to be part of the sequel.

As Mukesh Bhatt tells a tabloid, “Mallika has been meeting us for the last few days. Discussions are on and she’s a strong contender.” However, earlier reports suggested that some newcomer will be signed opposite Emraan Hashmi.

Vivek cancels honeymoon due to busy schedual

The wedding preparations are in full swing for actor Vivek Oberoi and his fiancée Priyanka Alva who are said to enter wedlock on October 29.

Unlike other stars who keep such affairs secret, Vivek talked openly about the wedding and reception while appearing on an entertainment channel.

“We will be hosting a grand reception in Mumbai where chefs from all over the country (coming from a particular chain of hotel) will be dishing up a lavish spread of their signature dishes. The wedding will be in Bangalore, on this huge property owned by Priyanka’s family.”

And what about the dream honeymoon? “No honeymoon for us right away as I am busy with the promotions of Rakht Charitra. But we’re planning something sometime in November. Priyanka likes deep-sea diving and I like flying planes, so maybe we could do a bit of both.”

Ajay Devgn and Bobby Deol as Santa & Banta

Bollywood actors Ajay Devgn and Bobby Deol were last seen together in the 2005 film Tango Charlie, which did not do well at the Box Office. Since then, they have not appeared together in any movie. Now, after five years, Ajay and Bobby are again going to share screen space with the new film titled Santa Banta.

Sameer Karnik will be directing this movie, whose title suggests that it will be liked by many people. The filmmaker happens to be a good friend of Bobby and they have earlier worked on the films like Nanhe Jaisalmer and Heroes.

The director is now working with Bobby in another film titled Yamla Pagla Deewana, which also stars his brother Sunny Deol and father veteran star Dharmendra.

The leading ladies for Santa Banta are not finalized yet and the shooting is likely to begin by February next year.

Ajay has given many successful and notable films in these years but Bobby has almost lost his charm and one can hardly remember any of his films doing well in the recent times.

IT raid in Sajid Nadiadwala's office

Producer Sajid Nadiadwala's Anjaani Anjaani is not as big a success as Arbaaz Khan's Dabangg. And yet after Arbaaz's office a few days ago, it was Sajid Nadiadwala's office on Yari Road which was raided by income tax officials on Thursday afternoon at around 3 pm.

A large number of IT officials swooped down on Nadiadwala's office to check his accounts and records.

The producer whose last three films have been the flop Kambakkht Ishq, the super hit Housefull and the moderately successful Anjaana Anjaani sounded quite relaxed.

"It's just a routine inspection. The IT people are here in my office checking my records. I am with them. I guess getting a visit from income-tax officials is one way of knowing how much a filmmaker matters," joked Sajid, showing no outward signs of stress.

Sonam falls ill again; suffers relapse of typhoid

Last month we had informed you about actress Sonam Kapoor suffering from typhoid. The actress unfortunately has now once again suffered a relapse and is again in ill-health.

Sonam's health started deteriorating while shooting for Anees Bazmee's Thank You in Canada. However, being the professional that she is, she didn't want to put the unit in any sort of problem and continued shooting despite not keeping too well. After returning to India, she underwent some tests and it was diagnosed as typhoid. Even though she undertook treatment, it seems to have relapsed.

Sonam's parents Anil and Sunita Kapoor are also very concerned about her health and have asked her to take it easy for a few days.

We wish the chirpy actress a speedy recovery.

John Abraham sentenced 15 days imprisonment

Jhootha Hi Sahi is just around the corner for release and news surfaces, that the lead actor John Abraham has been sentenced to 15 days imprisonment. The first thought is whether this is a publicity stunt or is this for real… Well, seems like its true.

In April 2006, John was involved in a road accident where he apparently rammed his bike into a cycle thus injuring two people. However, the actor who hurt himself in the incident took both the injured men to a hospital for medication.

The verdict for this case of rash and negligent driving was declared yesterday which sentenced John to 15 days simple imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs. 1500 considering his act of responsibility towards the two injured people. However, the actor acquired bail immediately and continued the promotions for his upcoming film.

Mahie Gill's item number edited out from Knock Out

The much talked-about item song featuring Mahie Gill in Mani Shankar's Knock Out has been knocked out of film just days before its release. Touted as the next 'Munni Badnaam' in the charts, the number was shot recently by the film's producers and apparently without the director's consent. On hearing about the embellishment director Mani Shankar was horrified.

Says a source, "Mani immediately got in touch with his producer Sohail Maklai asking why material was added to the film without his consent. Sohail tried to explain to him that it was to enhance the massy element. Mani had no choice but to allow the song to be shot. But when he incorporated it into the film he immediately felt it was not working. He removed the song just days before the prints went out."

Apparently, the producers had decided to do all the promotional footage on their own without the director's active participation. Says the source, "Mani was opposed to cutting the promos highlighting shots that resembled Phone Booth. If the producers had listened to him the trouble with 20th Century Fox over plagiarism allegations could've been avoided since Knock Out has nothing to do with Phone Booth."

This time Mani Shankar stood his ground. He would not allow the item song into his narrative especially since the director apparently found the movements given to Mahie to be vulgar.

When contacted Mani admits he opposed the inclusion of the song and removed it from his film. "My film is a political thriller that moves in real time. A break for an item song was just not needed. We removed Mahie Gill's number after shooting it. As for whether I approved of her movements, that question has no relevance since the number is no longer in my film."

Mahie Gill appears surprised to know that her number has been knocked out of Knock Out.

Trying to hide her disappointment the actress says, "Nobody has informed me! Has my number really been edited out? Maybe after shooting it they realized it didn't jell with the narrative. I had fun shooting the number with Ganesh Acharya. Now I've shot an item song for Vinay Shukla's Mirchi with the legendary choreographer Saroj Khan."

Hopefully, Mahie's item number in Mirchi would have a better fate.

Himesh's Kajraare releases with morning shows in just 2 theatres

These days marketing and promoting a film extensively before its release has become almost mandatory. Hence, we were completely taken by surprise when we got to know that the forthcoming Himesh Reshammiya starrer Kajraare has released today (15 Oct) without any fanfare. Yes…you heard it right, Kajraare has released in just 2 cinema halls across India, namely New Empire in Mumbai and Apollo in Pune and that too with just one matinee show at each of these theatres.

There is no denying the fact that after Box Office disasters such as Karzzzz and Radio, Himesh's market value has taken a beating. However, despite that, no one expected a big budget film like Kajraare to release all of a sudden and that too with morning shows in just 2 cinema halls.

Kajraare is directed by Pooja Bhatt and produced by Bhushan and Krishan Kumar. Why the makers have taken such a sudden and shocking decision is something which remains a mystery as all attempts to contact anyone closely associated with the film proved to be futile.

Sanjay Dutt to play sutradhaar in Tees Maar Khan

Sanjay Dutt is one man most people look up to as a person who has lived through much and yet has a smile on his face. Well for Dutt fans, there is some good news. Farah Khan's film Tees Maar Khan starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif which is scheduled to hit screens in December will feature Sanjay Dutt's voice. You read it right.

It is learnt that Sanjay Dutt will be the sutradhaar (narrator) of the film. His narrative has been penned by Shirish Kunder and his voice will also be featured in the trailers of Tees Maar Khan.

It was Shirish's idea to have Dutt introduce the various characters at the beginning of the film. However, the interesting part is that Dutt isn't charging a single penny for doing so.

Shah Rukh's Don 2 gets bill waiver from German government

After the immensely successful remake of the blockbuster Don, Shah Rukh's all set to star again in the sequel which is being shot in Berlin. The German government is to provide an astounding rebate of 3 million euros to the producers. Our sources reveal that this is the first time that such a heavy concession is being offered to any film shot in the country.

The action sequences and stunts are already being filmed in the commercial districts of the city. The production schedule is to last for over two months in and around various locations in Berlin. The source also reveals that the German government has announced on their website that they will co-operation and support to the filming of the movie. A local film promotion company named Medienboard has provided local support with 550,000 euros in the form of funds. This is the first time an India film has received such a big investment from a local media company.

Tourism in Berlin is expected to get a boost with Don 2; a source adds that after Shah Rukh attended the Berlinale Film Festival last year for his film My Name Is Khan, the decision was made to shoot Don 2 in the German Capital.

Producer Ritesh Sidhwani said they had to finish filming first and depending on them getting through the minimum points required to meet the country's culture test, a certain portion of the budget spent in Germany will be given as subsidy. He however, refused to speculate on the rebate being offered.

RGV and KJo's war of words on Twitter

Ram Gopal Varma and Karan Johar belong to two completely different schools of filmmaking and every now and then, they don't hesitate in taking pot shots at each other. Now with RGV's Rakht Charitra ready for release next week, once again a new war of words has emerged between him and KJo

It all started on popular social networking site Twitter when Ram Gopal Varma made a statement saying, "Rc has no loving families...it only has warring families. So all those who liked kabhi khushi kabhi gum better stay away from Rakta charitra"

In reply, Karan Johar who actually was on a so-called Twitter sabbatical tweeted, "Apparently Rakhtcharitra is not for people who liked K3G!! Didn't know planet pluto had multiplexes!! Aliens can't wait to see it!!"

Ramu in his own tongue-in-cheek humorous style replied to Karan and said, "@kjohar25 ha ha ha ha that's a super one karan" He also went on to add, "Having said that rakta charitra is meant for men in women and not for women in men"

While Karan is yet to react to this comment, one thing is certain that this is just the beginning and maybe the best is yet to come

Aamir Khan plays barber and shopkeeper in new TATA Sky ads

Aamir Khan is one actor who is known to go to great lengths to get into the skin of the character. In his last commercial for TATA Sky, Aamir was seen in the get-up of a milkman and he did look very convincing as one.

Now the buzz is that, Aamir would now don the garb of a barber and a shopkeeper in TATA Sky's two latest commercials.

In both the ads, the customer walks in asking for a particular haircut or a white shirt, while he is forced to take something completely different. The situation shown in the ad films draws a parallel between the DTH companies and the barber and the shopkeeper and has been communicated through the use of humour and satire.
