Diwali Sparklers

Aftab Shivdasani
Thankfully I am in Mumbai this year for Diwali. My idea of Diwali celebration is to have a cosy dinner with friends and this year I shall do the same. But before that I make it a point to attend the puja that is held at my uncle’s place.

Asin Thottumkal
Even though Diwali is not a big festival in Kerala, I have grown up celebrating it by lighting diyas with my friends. I studied in Naval Public School, I have had a cosmopolitan upbringing. If I am home for Diwali, I still light lamps. But last year, I was in London for the shoot of London Dreams and this time I am busy promoting it.

Unfortunately I won’t be here during Diwali because I am off to London where my next film, Shyam Benegal’s Well Done Abba is being showcased at the London Film Festival. But I would wish everyone a very happy and safe Diwali. Though I do play cards, I lose money all the time. I don’t enjoy gambling too much but during Diwali, it’s like paying for entertainment. But one thing that I am not very happy about is the high noise levels. It’s very disturbing for the elderly and for the animals. Crackers are not good for our environment and I don’t understand why anybody should waste money on crackers. It’s a time of getting together and having fun.

Diwali is one of my favourite Indian festivals but for the fifth year in a row I am shooting over Diwali, this time for Chai Garam in Thailand...However the film industry is my second family, so I have no regrets since I am shooting with a wonderful cast and crew which comprises of Esha Deol, Govinda, Suniel Shetty and director Aditya Dutt.

Deepika Padukone
I make it a point to spend Diwali with my parents every year, so it will be the same this year too. In my family, the festival is celebrated in the traditional way, but without the card-playing. When we were children there was the excitement of getting new clothes but today I have a full wardrobe, so this year I will buy myself a piece of new jewellery.

The last two years I was away from Mumbai as I was shooting, but this year I am very much around. Diwali time is when my cousins from all over come to Mumbai and we have a blast mostly eating the traditional vegetarian fare my mom cooks. We have cut down on bursting crackers as we are aware the pollution it causes.

Lara Dutta
Last year, I was shooting in Dubai for Do Knot Disturb and missed out on all the fun. This year, I am looking forward to spending the day the traditional way - pujas, preparing delicacies and decorating the house. My parents and sisters will come down along with my nieces who are five and ten years old respectively. They look forward to the crackers, though not the noisy ones. I am also planning to take them out for the 3-D animation feature - Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs.

It’s a very special Diwali for me as it coincides with my second release All The Best, which I know will appeal to everyone. After the release I shall rush to Pune where I will spend the festival with my family. My mother is very particular that we get up before sunrise to have an oil bath. And then follow the festivities. I like to decorate the house with rangoli and put up decorations and of course tuck in the yummy sweets and chakli.

Neha Dhupia
This Diwali I am going to be home after a long time. My parents are coming from Delhi and my brother is coming from Dubai so it’s almost like a family reunion for us. This time I have also taken a stand of not bursting any firecrackers because of the increasing levels of pollution. I insist on a green Diwali because that is the only thing that will light up our lives!

Neil Nitin Mukesh
Last year I was away from home during Diwali, shooting for New York. This year I want to spend some quality time with my parents, brother and friends. I will be there for all the puja at home and will then go for card parties.

Priyanka Chopra
Diwali is a very special festival for me. It’s a symbol for new beginnings, family get-togethers… a time to forget all your troubles and just celebrate the joys of actually being a family. It’s a joyous time and has been always very lucky for me. All my films that have released during this time have done very well, right from Aitraaz to Fashion and Dostana. Every year, I make it a point to put rangoli and embellish my entire house with diyas during Diwali.

Sameera Reddy
Diwali, as we all know, is one festival that everyone in India celebrates with a lot of zest. I am no exception but the only thing that is different this year round is that I will celebrate it miles away in France. Back home, Diwali means a lot of colour and lights all around, family get-together and a lot of festivities. Even though I feel upset about being away from home at such times I plan to make the best of Diwali in a foreign land.

Sohail Khan
Like Eid, Diwali too is celebrated with gusto at our place. The whole family gets together and we love to gorge on home-made goodies. My sister Arpita insists that we play a few round of cards and I like to join her. But the scale is very small and since it is played amongst family members the money stays within.

Vidya Balan
No taash or crackers for peace-loving Tam Brahmins... just new clothes, lots of diyas, jaangaree (jalebi), laddoo, muthuswaram (chakli) and pokorram etc. Relatives and friends, gifts and prayers. That’s all!
