Time and again, amongst others, filmmaker Rakesh Roshan has successfully exploited the theme of the triumph of the underdog, where the lead protagonist is shown to be weakling or one with a disability and an ordinary mortal. How can we forget Rekha's memorable revenge act in KHOON BHARI MAANG or Hrithik's award winning man-child act in KOI... MIL GAYA.

Even Aamir Khan's directorial debut venture TAARE ZAMEEN PAR was an excellent example of how the audience connects if the lead protagonist is shown to be an underdog. In fact Shah Rukh Khan's very own RAB NE BANA DI JODI saw the theme emerge triumphant at the box office, with SRK's Suri act winning the hearts of countless females. And with MY NAME IS KHAN opening to a phenomenal response (wherever it has released globally), it appears that director Karan Johar too has adopted the theme of the triumph of the underdog as a recipe for sure shot success.
For those who are still unaware, in MNIK SRK suffers from Asperger's syndrome and is shown to be weak but he overcomes all the difficulties and hurdles to achieve his goal and emerges an international hero.
So, once again, it appears that this theme will prove to be money spinner as it has done on numerous other occasions, provided the script and execution are as tight as in MNIK and in the above mentioned movies.
