To the present day generation, the dignified middle aged woman essaying the role ofShah Rukh Khan's mother in MY NAME IS KHAN may be just another character actor, but those who have a sound knowledge of Bollywood of the seventies will know that this is no ordinary artist.The actress in question is Zarina Wahab, touted as the next Jaya Bhaduri (Bachchan) because of her acting caliber and the innocent girl next door image. She was a favourite of Rajshri Productions, one of India's leading production house and has a number of hits to her credit. Some of the milestone movies that come to mind right ways are CHHOTI SI BAAT, CHITCHOR, GHARONDA and SAWAN KO AANE DO. Zarina made a great pair with Amol Palekar who had a common man image and both complemented each other.

However, after some forgettable ventures Zarina faded into oblivion but is now making her presence felt. She might have made a comeback with duds like DIL MAANGE MORE and Subhash Ghai's KISNA but her short, scintillating and touching performance in Karan Johar's MY NAME IS KHAN is certainly befitting of her stature and sure goes to show that she has lost none of her skills.
A role which was initially to be essayed by an actress no less than Shabana Azmi, who was unable to do it because of her busy schedule. As the independent, caring mother who teaches young SRK what being human is all about, Zarina is superb.
The opening scenes of the film where she conveys to young Shah Rukh that there are only two kinds of people in this world, either good or bad, sets the tone for the movie and this message of universal brotherhood is conveyed so effectively by Zarina that the audience takes this message of humanity with them while leaving the hall.
Well, Rajshri's former blue eyed girl has indeed made a great comeback and none could have conveyed this message of national integration and humanity better than her!
