Prolific film maker Sanjay Gupta may well be heading towards a spot amongst the elite in the record books. He is perhaps the first every producer in the history of modern day Bollywood who has enjoyed the release of two of his movies on the same day PANKH and THE GREAT INDIAN BUTTERFLY. What's more, he now also holds the distinction of having his films in two different languages - Hindi and English respectively.
"Really, am I the first ever film maker who is enjoying this feat? Well, I didn't know that", says Sanjay Gupta as he is genuinely surprised when informed about this coincidence, "It wasn't planned this way though. Both the films were supposed to be released earlier though. However, as luck would have it, now PANKH as well as THE GREAT INDIAN BUTTERFLY have arrived on 2nd April."
While for a producer, this is a definite first, there have been at least a couple of instances before when a director has enjoyed two of his films arriving on the same day. More than a decade back, David Dhawan saw the release of DEEWANA MASTANA (Anil Kapoor, Govinda, Juhi Chawla) and MR. & MRS. KHILADI (Akshay Kumar, Juhi Chawla) releasing together on 10th October 1997. A few years back, Priyadarshan saw a double bill in the form of GARAM MASALA (Akshay Kumar, John Abraham) and KYON KI (Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor), both of which arrived on the same day (2nd November 2005). Expectedly, only one of the two releases survived at the box office with DEEWANA MASTANA and GARAM MASALA coming up trumps.
However, the situation is different with the twin releases of this week as Sanjay Gupta is quite relaxed about the eventual outcome of both the films. "These are films which are a creatively enriching experience and I am sure my directors Sudipto Chattopadhyaya and Sarthak Dasgupta thoroughly enjoyed making them. These are art films and if box office comes calling, then well it would only be an icing on the cake", concludes Gupta.
