It was a pleasant surprise for even those in the DMK, when Kushboo, who recently said she would like to join the Congress, called on Chief Minister and DMK president M Karunanidhi Friday and enrolled herself in the party.
But the answer came straight from the DMK patriarch, who said “it’s not a sudden development. The talks with her had been going on since a month”, while addressing the media along with the actress, Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin and Finance Minister K Anbazhagan.
Stating that Kushboo’s political ideals were in sync with that of the DMK and that's why she was welcomed, Karunanidhi said, “this could be borne out by the fact that Kushboo had effectively played the role of Periyar’s wife Maniyammai in a biopic. It was her understanding and affinity to our ideals that enabled her to play the role with aplomb.”
The Chief Minister denied that there was any idea of fielding her against former Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa in the next Assembly elections
Kushboo said she was attracted by the DMK’s ideologies and its commitment to women’s empowerment. Denying that she had said that she would be joining the Congress, Kushboo said after the Supreme Court judgment (quashing cases against her) she had only said she was attracted by the various welfare measures implemented by the Congress in Mumbai.
Asked whether she would continue to express her opinions freely, Kushboo said she would be cautious in making speeches because whatever she said would be linked to the party. To a question on whether she would quit the “Jackpot” programme, a reality show being telecast on Jaya TV, Kushboo said she would continue to act in films and conduct reality shows.
