The Big Guns of Tamil Cinema

Tamil cinema has changed. Both the quality and quantity of the movies produced from Kodambakkam has increased radically. One reason could be the talented bunch of directors who have unleashed their creativity and another reason is the driving force of the producers who have not compromised on the quality of production values. Here’s, a list of production companies who have made a mark for themselves and are always open to creative writers and innovative directors.

Written in alphabetical order:

AGS Entertainments

The makers of super hit movies like ‘Thiruttu Payalae’, ‘Santosh Subramaniam’, etc and the latest ‘Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam’, AGS Entertainments have brought out some of the best entertainers in Tamil cinema lately. They have been a free hand with directors like Susi Ganesan, ‘Jayam’ Raja, Chimbu Devan and many more. Not compromising on quality, their movies have rich production values that a member of the audience will look for.

Look at the sets or costumes of ‘IKMS’ and one can imagine how much has been spent on them! AGS Entertainments’ forthcoming project includes the eagerly expected ‘Madharasapattinam’ that had an out of the world audio launch. The music release of the movie itself gave the essence of the movie with extraordinary setting. One can expect the same in the movie with sets and costumes that takes you back in time to pre-independent Madras. AGS also has ‘Bale Pandiya’, a youthful entertainer that is set for release soon.

Cloud Nine Movies

Cloud Nine Movies, founded by Dhayanidhi Alagiri, producers of innovative and high entertainment movies are receiving the attention of most members of the audience lately. Recall their first production ‘Thamizh Padam’. It was a super hit in the beginning of 2010 and ever since that; Cloud Nine has not stopped looking beyond. Not just as producers but as cinema lovers, Cloud Nine Movies have released entertaining films like ‘Vaarnam Aayiram’ and even the latest super hit ‘Paiyaa’.

Making movies needs a passion and looks like Cloud Nine is all about that. Their current project includes ‘Thoonganagaram’ that will be released later this year. Not just that the production house will produce Ajith’s 50th film under the direction of Gautham Menon, later this year.

Red Giant Movies

Talk about big budget movies and one would be reminded of Red Giant Movies floated by Udhayanidhi Stalin. The makers of high budget movies like ‘Kuruvi’, ‘Aadhavan’, etc are one example of a production company that releases movies on a regular basis without compromising on quality and quantity. Not just the producers they are, Red Giant Movies are also encouraging distributors for movies like ‘Vinnaithandi Varuvaya’, etc.

They have a series of big budget flicks lined up. Kamal Haasan’s ‘Manmadhan Ambu’ with K S Ravikumar, Suriya’s ‘7am Arivu’ with director Murugadoss, Udhayanidhi’s debut movie as hero and a couple of other movies.

Sun Pictures

From the Sun Network comes Sun Pictures, the makers and presenters of commercial entertainers like Nakulan’s ‘Kadhalil Vizhunden’ and ‘Masilamani’; Jeeva’s ‘Thenavattu’; Karunaas ‘Dindigul Sarathy’; Dhanush’s ‘Padikathavan’; Sundar C’s ‘Thee’; Ninaithale Innikum; Bharath’s ‘Kanden Kadhalai’; Vishal’s ‘Theeradha Vilaiyattu Pillai’ and not to forget Suriya’s ‘Ayan’, ‘Singam’ and Vijay’s ‘Vettaikaran’ and ‘Sura’.

At least one release a month is their strategy. Sun Pictures is a household name now. Almost all super hits are credited to them. Interestingly their first movie as producers will be superstar Rajinikanth’s ‘Endhiran’ which is said to be a ‘path breaking’ as well as the costliest film in Indian Cinema.

With such production houses competing with each other for quality cinema, one can be assured of entertainment in Kollywood for ages to come. Directors will have an array of options and end of the day, the regular film viewer will have a feast for his filmy senses.
