Amitabh Bachchan was born on October 11, 1942 in Allahabad. He is the son of the well-known poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan. Before moving to Mumbai to pursue his dreams of becoming a Bollywood star, Amitabh lived in Culcutta, where he was a stage actor, radio announcer and freight company executive.
When Amitabh first came to Mumbai it was very difficult for him to find work. Most filmmakers thought his looks were unconventional and that he was too tall. He was finally given what seemed to be his big break in 1969 by K A Abbas, who gave Amitabh Bachchan a starring role in the film ‘Saat Hindustani.’ Unfortunately the film bombed and Amitabh’s role went relatively unnoticed.
Then in 1971 he was given his first lead role in the film ‘Pyar Ki Kahani’, directed by Ravikant Nagaich. Amitabh starred in a few other films after including, ‘Ek Nazar,’ where he met and fell in love with his future wife Jaya Bhaduri, and ‘Anand.’ Amitabh won a best supporting actor award for his role in ‘Anand’ but he was still unable to breakthrough as a major star.
That was until his role in his thirteenth film, ‘Zanjeer.’ Shortly after, Amitabh starred in a slew of big hits, such as ‘Namak Haraam,’ ‘Sholay,’ ‘Deewaar,’ and ‘Amar Akbar Anthony.’ In 1983 Amitabh was seriously injured on the set of ‘Coolie.’ While he was healing in the hospital, the whole nation was offering prayers and well-wishes.
Then in 1984, after the death of Indira Ghandi, Amitabh dabbled a little bit in politics, contesting the general elections for his hometown. His political career, however, was short-lived. He resigned his seat in Parliament and vowed that he would never go into politics again.
From 1988 to 1991, Amitabh hit a rough patch in his otherwise illustrious acting career. The movie industry was all ready to write him off when Amitabh Bachchan came back with a vengeance. He had a stellar performance in the hit film, ‘Hum.’
Then he hit yet another bump in the road when his production company, the Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited, was buried deep in debt. Once again the industry was ready to write him off but Amitabh proved everyone wrong as the host of the TV series, ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati.’
On February 15, 2009 Amitabh’s son Abhishek Bachchan premiered his new film ‘Delhi-6’ at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Abhishek made special note of the day because it marked the 40th anniversary of his father’s career in Bollywood.
