Shilpa Shetty was born on June 8, 1975 in Karnataka. Her mother Sunanda was a famous model when she was younger. Shetty has always been active and in shape, even when she was younger. She was the captain of her school's baseball team and has earned a black belt in Karate.
She is also a philanthropist, participating in numerous social activities. She is attached to various social organizations, such as PETA and Anti Aids campaign.
Shilpa Shetty began her career as a model but it wasn't long before she caught the eye of Bollywood directors. She got her first break in the film "Gaata Rahe Mera Dil." Unfortunately the film was never released or even completed.
Shortly after, she starred in "Baazigar" opposite Shahrukh Khan and Kajol. The film was a huge success, and Shilpa Shetty earned a Filmfare nomination for Best Newcomer of the year.
After her first breakthrough performance, it seemed as though Shetty never stopped working. She starred in a slew of films, such as "Mr. Romeo," "Dus," "Gambler," and "Shool." She quickly became one of the most well known and successful Bollywood actresses.
In 2001 Shilpa Shetty won the IIFA (International India Film Awards) award for the Best Actress. In 2007 Shilpa Shetty joined the cast of the British reality TV show "Celebrity Big Brother." The widely popular show was going into its fifth season.
It is reported that the actress was paid as much as a million dollars to appear on the show. She joined a cast of other celebrities, which included Jermaine Jackson, Jack Tweed, and Jade Goody. Shilpa became the first participant of Indian origin to ever appear on the show and most gave her little or no chance to actually win it all.
At first it seemed as though everyone's predictions were right; Shilpa Shetty was nominated to be evicted almost every week. It was also reported that she was called racial names by the other cast mates.
Despite all the hardships she had to endure while on the show, the graceful actress prevailed. To everyone's surprise, she won the show and received one hundred thousand pounds for winning it all.
The show earned her international success and she won over the British audience for the way she handled all the problems that occurred while on the show.see less biography
