Mrinal Sen’s ‘Kandahar’ at Cannes!

Veteran director Mrinal Sen’s ‘Kandahar’ will be screened at Cannes this year.
‘Kandahar’ has Naseerudin Shah, Shabana Azmi and Pankaj Kapur in the lead. The movie was released in 1983 and received a lot of appreciation. The movie will be screened under the ‘Classics’ category at the Cannes Film Festival.
Sources say while a huge Indian contingent is going for Cannes anyway, Mrinal Sen will participate in the event to see his movie’s screening.
‘Kandahar’ was supposed to be screened at Cannes last year but due to the low quality prints of ‘Kandahar’, the movie was subjected to rejection. Sources say with the interference of the Prime Minister’s office and the ministry of Information and Broadcasting, National Film Archives, the body that stores and preserves movies, has restored, a number of prints of Mrinal Sen’s classics with digital sound effects and increased picture quality. Quality, of course matters!
